If the "Preserve nondestructive edits" setting is enabled in your Photomator editing settings, Photomator automatically saves your changes as linked .photo-edit files, also known as Sidecar files. Normally, there are only two locations where Sidecar files can be saved - in your iCloud Drive, or in the Pictures folder on your Mac. However, by taking advantage of the macOS Alias functionality, you can have your Sidecar files be saved anywhere on or off your Mac. Here's how to set this up:

  1. Open Photomator and go to Photomator > Settings... > Editing.
  2. Make sure "Save Sidecar files in" is set to "Pictures folder".
  3. Perform some edits on any photo and save your changes.
  4. Close Photomator.
  5. Open Finder and go to the Pictures folder on your Mac (Go > Home > Pictures).
  6. Find the Linked Files folder and move it to the location where you want your edits to be stored. This can be anywhere on your Mac, external drives, iCloud, or even third-party cloud storage.
  7. Make an Alias for the Linked Files folder by Control-clicking it and choosing Make Alias.
  8. Move the Alias back to the Pictures folder of your Mac.
  9. Open Photomator and grant access to the Linked Files folder when prompted.

And voila, you're done! Now, when saving edits, the Alias will automatically redirect Photomator to the Linked Files folder, which can be stored nearly anywhere. Now, you can edit photos in Photomator and have all your edits be saved in the most efficient location for your particular workflow.
